Biography

Joel Floyd, PhD is the founding principal and the School Director of adult ESL and Continuing Education at English for a Lifetime Language Institute, located in Peachtree Corners, GA. English for a Lifetime serves a unique learner population, providing adults with limited English proficiency (LEP) an academic and vocational ESOL program designed for personal, workforce and continuing education purposes.

As an adult education school leader, Dr. Floyd’s constant goal is to ensure that faculty, staff, and all internal stakeholders are provided with a robust skill set that evidences successful adult learner (learning) outcomes and workforce readiness. Equally, he has led several teacher professional development seminars across the state of Georgia backed by both practical and theoretical research, technology, and current trends in the adult education field.

Dr. Floyd’s career experiences have given him abundant opportunities to create and implement effective strategies for adult student recruitment, retention, student affairs, adult learner theories, and the building of school and community relations for the purposes of lifelong learning coupled with school wide strategic planning, mass marketing initiatives, budgetary oversight, introducing and maintaining the latest data in both qualitative and quantitative research.

In the same context, Dr. Floyd’s research interests focus on critical pedagogy among English language learners, teacher professional development in the adult education field, e-learning in non-traditional adult education programs, and the retention and recruitment of non -traditional adult learners. Recently, Dr. Floyd was elected  as the 2nd Vice President, year 2021-2022, in GATESOL, one of Georgia’s top affiliate non-profit agencies to Georgia Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. 

Finally, Dr. Floyd’s philosophy of adult education, specifically among non-traditional leaders, echoes the words of Mother Teresa, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one [one at a time]…”
